Countryman - The Movie 1982 (by GanjaRaymie)
one of my favorite films. i had a vhs of it back in the day.
really, really awesome. the weather was perfect. 9 miles went smoothly. i took some pictures, but i,ll get to those later.
i love my daughter. i love her more than any other person on this planet. she’s the greatest person i’ve ever met.
here in Ohio, the best hiking is found in the eastern and south eastern parts of the state. those areas are also not very diverse ethnically.
all this said, i need to tell a story.
after we were done hiking and driving home, we stopped to grab some food. we didn’t go to restaurant. the options are few. but, like every place in the US there is a Walmart. since meat isn’t in the menu we went in to grab some veggies and stuff. get in line to pay for it and i notice a security guard staring. i’m thinking it’s another hick looking at my tattoos. it happens regularly. then i realize there are a few people staring at us. my daughter noticed too. she turns to the cashier and asks,”why are all of you staring? don’t you know it is rude?” i love my girl.
“it’s your clothes. the look african.”
i’m thinking that i’m going to have to just leave at this point to avoid making a scene.
“african?” asks Ri.
“the african colors.”
i then realize that they have been staring at my Zion Rootswear shirt and the head wrap that her stepfather’s father (a very kind 60 something Falasha) gave her. both feature red, green, and gold.
Ri says back to her,”a color is just a color. you say it is ‘african’, i say it is pretty. i love these colors. i love all the colors.”
the 3 Amish men behind us applauded her response. i have never been more proud of her than at that moment.
i really love my daughter.
it also encouraged me as a parent knowing that i am ‘training her in the way’.
oh, she’s not quite 10 yet. in a few months.
